We are always thrilled to share the success stories of our alumni, and Katie Fairhurst’s recent acceptance into the University of Maryland’s program is a highlight. In addition to celebrating student achievements, we also value the experiences and perspectives of their parents. We received an insightful letter from Katie’s father, Dr. Rick Fairhurst, which provides a unique view into a parent’s experience during their child’s path to a career in medicine.
“IMA provided Katie an opportunity to be directly involved in patient care, to see advanced, untreated pathologies, and to experience the hard work and long hours it takes to properly care for patients. Katie also experienced a culture radically different from, yet surprisingly similar, to her own. She returned from her Kenya trips a completely changed individual, no longer a novice but a veteran, no longer a girl but a woman. … While friends and family hardly recognized Katie, I knew exactly how Africa and its people would transform her– for the better. IMA is by far the most impactful and worthwhile investment I’ve made in my daughter.“
– Dr. Rick Fairhurst, MD, PhD
Katie Fairhurst’s story, chronicled through her experiences with International Medical Aid (IMA) and the reflections of her father, Dr. Rick Fairhurst, offers a compelling narrative of personal growth, academic pursuit, and the life-changing, career-shaping impact of real-world medical experience. Katie’s journey from a curious child with an interest in medicine to a dedicated student accepted into the prestigious University of Maryland MD/PhD Program underscores the value of immersive internship experiences provided by IMA.
Meet Katie Fairhurst - Her Early Inspirations
Katie Fairhurst’s path to medicine began in the corridors of her childhood home, deeply influenced by the life and work of her father, Dr. Rick Fairhurst. His international medical research, particularly in malaria, introduced Katie to a world far beyond the typical childhood environment. This early introduction to the complex challenges of global health issues sparked an inherent curiosity in Katie, a curiosity that would grow into a lifelong passion.
From a young age, Katie was surrounded by conversations about medical breakthroughs, the intricacies of disease pathology, and the impact of healthcare interventions in developing countries. This environment was rich with learning opportunities, making medicine not just a profession to pursue but a vital part of her identity. Her father’s dedication to improving lives through medical research served as a constant inspiration, subtly guiding her toward a path in medicine.
Katie’s home was a treasure trove of medical literature and discussions, allowing her to grasp complex concepts from an early age. She grew up understanding the importance of medical research in addressing global health crises, particularly in regions plagued by diseases like malaria. This understanding fostered a sense of responsibility and a desire to contribute to the field.
Her father’s work, often taking him to remote corners of the world, was filled with stories of resilience and innovation in the face of limited resources. These stories shaped Katie’s perception of medicine as a field not only of science but also of creativity and compassion. She learned that medicine was about reaching out to those in need, often in the most challenging of circumstances.
“My father was a huge inspiration for me, as he traveled to countries such as Mali, Cambodia, and Thailand as a malaria researcher. In December 2017, I, quite spontaneously, applied for a medical internship with International Medical Aid (IMA). I had a sudden urge to travel and see medicine from a new perspective to better understand why my father fell in love with it.”
– Katie Fairhurst
Moreover, the global perspective her father brought into their home encouraged Katie to think beyond the conventional scope of medicine practiced in well-equipped, urban hospitals. She began to envision a career that combined clinical practice with the far-reaching impact of international medical aid, much like her father’s work.
As Katie grew older, her fascination with medicine evolved into a more defined goal. She started to seek out experiences that would bring her closer to her dream of becoming a doctor. Her father’s influence had planted the seed, but it was Katie’s own determination and passion that would see it grow into a fruitful career.
Katie’s early inspirations in the field of medicine were deeply rooted in her upbringing, surrounded by the influence of her father’s impactful work in international medical research. This environment nurtured her curiosity and set her on a path to pursue a career in medicine with a global perspective and a deep sense of purpose.
Life-changing, Career-making Experiences with IMA
In 2018 and 2019 , Katie participated in IMA’s Pre-Medicine Internship Program in Kenya. This experience, as vividly described in her essay “We’re All in This Together,“ was pivotal in shaping her medical career trajectory. Working in the Accident & Emergency Department of Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH ) in Mombasa, Katie witnessed the realities of medical practice in a resource-limited setting. Her observations of Kenyan patients and medical professionals dealing with life-and-death situations taught her valuable lessons in resilience, cultural sensitivity, and the human aspect of medicine.
“My first experience with IMA was nothing short of amazing, so much so, that I returned to Kenya with IMA this past summer. Seeing familiar faces, building off knowledge and observations from the year before, and spending concentrated time in the Accident & Emergency Department made both summers in Kenya exponentially more meaningful. Growing up, I knew medicine was it for me, but I didn’t quite know why. My experiences in Kenya helped answer the ‘why’ for me.”

Learning Beyond the Classroom
Katie’s involvement in various medical scenarios, from emergency care to surgery, provided her with a comprehensive view of the medical profession. This direct exposure to patient care, complex diagnoses, and surgical procedures enriched her understanding of medicine beyond theoretical knowledge, solidifying her passion for emergency medicine.
“Before coming to Kenya, I was unsure which specialty of medicine I wanted to pursue. I knew I did not want a purely academic career in research, for the clinical, patient-centered aspect of medicine is what excites me about the field. I spent one night in the emergency room at Coast General, and thanks to the incredible mentorship of the doctors, nurses, and techs I worked with, I immediately fell in love with emergency medicine. Working with Dr. Nuraiz, Dr. Mansur, Dr. Wallid, and Nurses Astrid, Noel, Karen, and Kennedy from the orthopedic clinic gave me a glimpse into what a career in emergency medicine would be like.”

An excerpt from his letter:
“During her time in Kenya, Katie learned more about the art of medicine and the culture of Africa than I could ever have taught her myself. She learned that one must improvise in under-resourced settings, persevere in challenging circumstances, and stay optimistic in horrendous situations. She returned from her Kenya trips a completely changed individual, no longer a novice but a veteran, no longer a girl but a woman.”
