Cotopaxi National Park

A highlands extension where altitude and weather shape the day more than distance.

Big Landscape, Clear Plan, Conservative Pace

Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi is one of the simplest high-impact extensions in Ecuador because the scenery is dramatic and the logistics can stay clean. Most interns base from Quito, plan an early start, and treat altitude as the main variable that shapes energy and comfort.

This is not a place where you need to prove anything. The best version is structured: a lagoon stop, a short walk in the páramo, and viewpoints that let you take in the scale without pushing a long hike.

Weather changes quickly in the highlands. A good plan assumes wind, mist, and strong sun can all happen in the same day. Layers, hydration, and an unhurried schedule matter more than trying to add extra stops.

The Best Approach: Use Quito as your base, schedule one main Cotopaxi day, and keep a second day as buffer or recovery. If you feel altitude effects, you slow down and keep the plan simple.

Altitude Awareness Makes This Better

Cotopaxi is a strong extension when you treat it as a paced day, not a checklist. The park sits at high elevation, and even short walks can feel heavier than expected if you are coming off demanding clinic weeks.

Students who enjoy it most keep the day conservative. They plan viewpoints and short routes, they bring layers, and they accept that visibility varies. If the volcano is in the clouds, the day is still worth it if you planned for the overall landscape.

Sample Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Quito Reset

Arrive or decompress after program weeks. Hydrate, eat a real meal, and keep the evening light so altitude and early starts are easier.

  2. Day 2

    Cotopaxi Day

Early start, lagoon stop, short páramo walk, and planned viewpoints. Keep the pace steady and leave room for weather changes.

  3. Day 3

    Buffer Or Departure

Use the day as recovery or travel cushion. If you feel great, choose one light add-on in Quito. Do not stack intensity.

Visibility can change quickly. Plan your photos around the landscape, not a guaranteed volcano view.

Otavalo Market

Otavalo Market

Otavalo is one of Ecuador’s most recognized artisan markets, anchored around Plaza de los Ponchos. What makes it worth your time is not a “souvenir run.” It is a working marketplace where many families and cooperatives sell textiles, woven goods, leather items, and handmade crafts as part of everyday life in the Andean highlands. For IMA interns, Otavalo…

    Uros Islands

The Uros Islands are a rare kind of landmark: meaningful, accessible, and easy to fit after an internship schedule. You can stay based in Puno, take a short boat ride onto Lake Titicaca, and spend your time learning how the floating islands are built and maintained. This is not an adrenaline stop. It is a culture-first extension that…

      Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the most requested extensions for IMA interns in South America because it feels like a true capstone. It is iconic, it is protected, and it rewards students who plan it correctly. That last part matters because Machu Picchu is not a “show up whenever” site. Entry is timed, your ticket aligns to a…
