Life At Altitude, With A Real Schedule

Wildlife and savanna in East Africa

Colca Canyon is one of the most memorable southern Peru extensions because it combines landscape, culture, and a pace that can be adjusted to your energy level. It is commonly described as one of the deepest canyon systems in the world, and the scale is obvious the moment you reach the viewpoints.

For IMA interns, Colca works when you plan it from Arequipa, take altitude seriously, and avoid packing the days too tightly. The best itineraries include one high-viewpoint morning, one lighter recovery afternoon, and at least one hot springs window for rest.

This is not only scenery. You are moving through a region where agriculture, water management, and village life have adapted to steep terrain and elevation. That context is part of the value.

The Best Approach: Use Arequipa as your acclimation base, then do Colca with one primary canyon day and built-in recovery time. If you feel altitude effects, you slow the plan down instead of forcing mileage.

Why This Add-On Works After Clinic Weeks

Colca is a good mix of effort and recovery. You can include a short hike, but you can also keep it viewpoint-based and still feel like you saw the canyon.

The experience is structured. Early morning viewpoint time, controlled transfers, and planned rest windows make it easier to enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed.

Travel day into the valley with scheduled stops. Short village time and early night to protect energy.

  3. Day 3

    Canyon Viewpoints And Village Context

Main canyon day with key viewpoints, terraces, and a paced schedule. Keep walking conservative.

  4. Day 4

    Condor Viewpoint Morning, Recovery Afternoon

Early visit for condor viewing opportunities, then scale down in the afternoon with rest or hot springs.

  5. Day 5

    Return And Departure Buffer

Altitude is the main variable. The best trips are the ones that plan recovery time instead of stacking long days back-to-back.

Hot Springs of Baños

Hot Springs of Baños

Baños de Agua Santa is one of Ecuador’s best-known towns for hot springs and easy nature access. For IMA interns, it works because it supports recovery. You can sleep, eat well, and decompress without needing a complicated itinerary. The goal here is not to prove anything. Most interns underestimate how tired they are after program weeks. Baños is…

    Uros Islands

The Uros Islands are a rare kind of landmark: meaningful, accessible, and easy to fit after an internship schedule. You can stay based in Puno, take a short boat ride onto Lake Titicaca, and spend your time learning how the floating islands are built and maintained. This is not an adrenaline stop. It is a culture-first extension that…

      Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the most requested extensions for IMA interns in South America because it feels like a true capstone. It is iconic, it is protected, and it rewards students who plan it correctly. That last part matters because Machu Picchu is not a “show up whenever” site. Entry is timed, your ticket aligns to a…
