The Serengeti, Done The Right Way

Wildlife and savanna in East Africa

Serengeti is the safari people think about when they picture East Africa: huge skies, long horizons, and animals moving through open plains in ways that feel almost unreal. For IMA students, it also works for a practical reason. The days have a clear rhythm. Early drive. Midday reset. Late drive. Sleep. Repeat. That structure matters when you have just finished long clinical days and you want an extension that feels exciting without being chaotic.

The Serengeti is not a “quick stop.” It is a place where the best moments build slowly. You might watch a herd shift direction over twenty minutes, or see predators settle into the shade while birds and smaller animals respond around them. That patience is part of ethical viewing. No chasing. No forcing a moment. Just time and distance, with rules that protect the park and the animals.

The Best Approach

Plan for three nights if you can. Two nights can work, but it often turns into transfers plus one “good” day. Three nights gives you repeat drives and a calmer pace, which is exactly what most students want after a demanding internship schedule.

Value For Pre-Health Students

A Serengeti extension can complement a global health experience in a way that is surprisingly relevant. Conservation and public health overlap. Land use, water access, livestock patterns, and tourism economics all shape health outcomes in real communities. When you see how an ecosystem is protected and managed, you start thinking differently about prevention, surveillance, and long-term systems.

Many students use this time to reflect on what they observed during their placement: resource constraints, clinical decision-making, and how culture influences care. A calm, structured safari creates mental space for that reflection.

Long Drives, Big Payoff

The Serengeti is designed around time in the vehicle, and that is not a negative. It is how you see patterns instead of single snapshots. The best guides move slowly, listen to what is happening around them, and prioritize distance and animal welfare over “getting closer.”

Expect early starts, dust, and long stretches without cell service. The tradeoff is a feeling of scale that you cannot replicate anywhere else. If your goal is a high-impact experience that still stays structured, this is one of the cleanest extensions to plan.

Sample Itinerary

4 Days, 3 Nights

  1. Day 1

Transfer in, settle, and take an afternoon drive when light is softer and animals begin moving again.

  2. Day 2

Early drive, midday reset, late drive. This is the “full Serengeti day” rhythm.

  3. Day 3

Another full day with routing based on conditions and wildlife movement. The repeat day is where many students see the most.

  4. Day 4

Morning drive, breakfast, and transfer out with buffer time for travel.

Many students pair Serengeti with Ngorongoro Crater when timing allows. The key is keeping transfers realistic so you are not living out of a bag.

    Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro Crater is the high-impact add-on for interns who want a dramatic landscape and a concentrated wildlife day without building a long safari circuit. It fits IMA schedules because the structure is simple: arrive, rest, crater day, depart. It feels significant without requiring a multi-stop itinerary. The crater day itself has a clear rhythm. You start early, descend…

      Selous Game Reserve

If you want a Tanzania safari that feels more remote than the busiest northern routes, Selous and the area managed as Nyerere National Park can be a strong fit. The landscape shifts between river corridors, woodlands, and open patches that pull wildlife in and out of view in a way that rewards patience. For IMA students, this extension…
