It must remain on your desk and in one piece, and you cannot tear out pages, remove the booklet from the room, wipe away your notes or write in it after returning from a break before the next section begins. If you need more space, raise your hand. The administrator will exchange the original booklet for a new one.
You cannot substitute your own paper, pen, pencil or marker. Under the Essentials, the permitted personal items are an accepted ID and eyeglasses, while the center supplies the noteboard, marker, storage key and earplugs. Which MCAT Sections Require Math?

The Math Concepts You Need to Know
The AAMC list of general mathematical concepts and techniques includes linear, semilog and log-log graphs, slopes, significant digits and reasonable numerical estimates. It also covers metric conversions, dimensional analysis, probability, proportions, ratios, percentages and square-root estimation.
You should understand scientific notation, simultaneous equations and exponentials and logarithms at an Algebra II level. The scope also includes basic trigonometric functions and special right triangles, vector addition and subtraction and the right-hand rule. Dot products, cross products and calculus are not required. When a conversion factor between metric and English units is needed, the AAMC says it will be provided.
This scope is a useful guide to the level of precision you need. The AAMC explicitly includes reasonable estimates and square-root estimations, which means your goal is not to reproduce calculator-level precision every time. You need to recognize relationships, manage powers of ten and determine whether an answer is reasonable.
How to Do MCAT Math Without a Calculator
Fast MCAT math depends on breaking a calculation into manageable parts rather than trying to hold every step in your head. Write enough work on your noteboard to catch mistakes, keep units visible and use the answer choices to decide how much precision you need.
Round and Estimate Before Multiplying
Round awkward values to nearby numbers that are easy to multiply. For example, treat 4.9 × 2.1 as 5 × 2, which equals 10. The exact product is 10.29, so the estimate is close enough when the answer choices are spread apart. Keep track of whether your rounding pushed the result up or down, especially if two choices are close together.
Separate Scientific Notation Into Two Steps
Handle the leading numbers and powers of ten separately. For multiplication, (3 × 104) × (2 × 10-7) becomes 6 × 10-3: multiply 3 by 2, then add 4 and -7. For division, (8 × 106) ÷ (2 × 102) becomes 4 × 104: divide 8 by 2, then subtract 2 from 6. This approach makes the exponent less likely to get lost in the arithmetic.
Estimate Logarithms and pH by Bracketing
Start with powers of ten you recognize. A hydrogen ion concentration of 1 × 10-5 M has a pH of 5, while 1 × 10-4 M has a pH of 4. Therefore, 3 × 10-5 M must have a pH between 4 and 5. Its exact value is 4.52, so an estimate of about 4.5 is enough when the choices do not demand greater precision.
Memorize Common Fraction Conversions
Knowing frequent fraction, decimal and percentage equivalents reduces unnecessary division. For example, 1/8 equals 0.125 or 12.5 percent. When a question asks for a proportion or percentage change, recognizing that relationship immediately can shorten the calculation.
Carry Units Through Every Line
Unit analysis can show you how to arrange a conversion and whether your final answer has the correct form. To convert 72 km/h, write 72 km/h × (1,000 m per 1 km) × (1 h per 3,600 s). Kilometers and hours cancel, leaving 20 m/s. If the unwanted units do not cancel, rearrange the conversion factors before doing the arithmetic.
Estimate Square Roots From Nearby Squares
Memorize a few common squares and locate the target between them. Because 7 × 7 equals 49, the square root of 50 must be just over 7. An estimate of 7.1 is close to the exact value of 7.07. The answer choices can tell you whether that level of precision is sufficient.
Across all these methods, estimate first and calculate more precisely only when necessary. If an estimate clearly matches one choice, stop. If two choices remain plausible, refine the step most likely to separate them. This keeps hand calculation purposeful rather than rushed.
How to Practice for a No-Calculator Exam
Put the calculator away from the beginning of content review rather than waiting until your final practice exams. Complete the arithmetic for every practice question by hand, using paper or a wet-erase surface and a fine-point marker. The goal is to make writing exponents, canceling units and estimating values feel normal before test day.
Use the answer choices as part of your practice. Before calculating, ask whether you need an exact result, an order of magnitude or a rough estimate. After solving, check the sign, exponent and units. If one of those is wrong, your answer is probably unreasonable even if the arithmetic looked convincing.
