2023 MCAT Test Dates and Score Release: The Definitive Guide

by internationalmedicalaid

Last Updated October 30, 2022

What is pre-registration?

Many future med students ask, “when does MCAT registration open in 2023?” Pre-registration gives test takers the chance to register for the MCAT before registration officially opens. However, you won’t be able to select a test date or location when pre-registering. You will only fill out your basic information and agree to the AAMC terms.

Can I change my MCAT test date?

The AAMC does allow test takers to reschedule their test date, but they will have to pay a rescheduling fee.

How much does the MCAT cost?

MCAT fees often change each testing year. It is important to stay up to date with the free schedule to avoid any surprises at registration time. Here are the 2022 MCAT fees.

  • Registration – $320
  • International Fee – $115
  • Test Center/Date Reschedule – $50 to $200
  • FAP Registration – $130
  • FAP Reschedule – $20 to $80

What should I do on test day?

There are a few things you can do to prepare and have the best experience on test day.

  • Double-check the MCAT test dates, locations, and times. Be sure to arrive at the testing location early.
  • You will need to go through a couple of security measures before entering the testing room. To make things easier, remember to bring a valid ID with information that matches the info you provided when registering for the test.
  • Make arrangements for your belongings beforehand as you cannot take your phone into the testing room.
  • Follow any COVID-19 protocols that your testing center has in place
  • The test takes between 7 to 8 hours, so if you think you may get hungry during the test, bring some drinks and snacks.

How many times can you take the MCAT?

All MCAT test takers should be aware of the test limits, especially if this is not their first time taking the MCAT.

  • You can only register for one MCAT at a time
  • You can take the test up to 3 times in one year
  • You can take the test 4 times in a two-year period
  • You can take the MCAT 7 times in your lifetime (starting with April 2015 administration)

While you can retake the MCAT, the number of times you can do so is limited, so be sure to follow the best study plan and practices. For more info on retaking the MCAT, check out our comprehensive guide.

AAMC has announced the 30 upcoming MCAT test dates in 2023. There are 4 MCAT test dates in January 2023 before taking a small break and resuming testing in the middle of March. Beginning on March 11, 2023, tests will be administered frequently through early September, with the final MCAT test date being September 9, 2023. All MCAT tests are held once per day starting at 8 A.M. Scores for each test date are set to be released approximately one month after the testing date.

Registration for the MCAT test dates from January through June will open on October 25 and October 26, 2022. The registration dates for the July through September test dates are yet to be released. Please keep in mind that popular test dates and MCAT centers fill up quickly, so we highly recommend pre-registering. Check out the list of test dates above and sign up for your preferred date. There is a registration fee for the MCAT. After you have selected and registered for your test date, it is time to begin crafting your study plan and MCAT prep.

Of course, there is a science to picking the best MCAT test date for you. It is important to be mindful of your schedule including any pre-med internships you have planned, your study plan, and if the MCAT score release dates will align with your medical school application deadlines.

Once you have selected your preferred test date, it is time to solidify your MCAT prep and study plan to secure the highest score. No matter how you choose to prep for the MCAT—online prep, one-on-one tutoring, or MCAT prep books—it is crucial to give yourself plenty of time to study and be as prepared for the test as possible. If you are unsure where to start or how to begin curating an MCAT study plan, consider seeking the professional assistance of medical school admissions consulting offered by IMA.
