How Much Does Physician Assistant School Cost in 2026?

If you are considering a career as a physician assistant, the cost of PA school is likely one of your biggest concerns. The answer depends on several factors, including the type of program, your residency status, geographic location, and how many direct patient care hours you need before applying. As of 2026, the average total tuition for a 27-month PA program sits at approximately $98,075 for resident students and $107,288 for nonresidents, according to data aggregated from the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA). Those numbers have risen steadily over the past several years, and they do not include living expenses, books, equipment, or application fees.

This article breaks down what PA school actually costs in 2026, how tuition varies by school type and state, what financial aid options exist, and how recent federal loan changes may affect your ability to finance your education. We also include a searchable table of tuition data from programs across the country so you can compare options side by side. Whether you are a pre-PA student mapping out your finances or a parent helping a student plan ahead, the goal here is to give you the clearest possible picture of what to expect.

PA School Cost Trends in 2026: What Has Changed

PA school tuition has been climbing at a rate of roughly 5.3% per year over the past five years. To put that in perspective, the average national tuition for a full-time PA student in 2001-2002 was $21,137. By the 2019-2020 academic year, that number had risen to $43,119. In 2026, the average resident tuition for a full 27-month program is now approximately $95,165 to $98,075, depending on the data source and how the calculation is framed. If the current trend continues, projections suggest the average could approach $103,300 by the 2026-2027 cycle.

Three structural factors are driving these increases. First, about 62.5% of PA programs in the United States are now housed at private institutions, where tuition averages $91,639 to $96,311 regardless of residency. Second, incidental costs such as textbooks and clinical equipment have increased sharply at private schools, rising 139% in recent years to approximately $4,672. Third, demand for PA education continues to outstrip capacity. There are now 322 ARC-PA accredited PA programs nationally, with projections of 360 accredited programs by 2029, but seat availability at public universities remains limited, accounting for only about 35.6% of total enrollment capacity.

For students comparing program costs, the difference between public and private institutions is significant. Public school residents pay an average of $56,718 for their full program, while nonresidents at those same public universities pay roughly $88,168. Private institutions charge an average of $91,639 or more, with no distinction between in-state and out-of-state students. These averages matter because they shape your total debt burden. The average PA graduate now carries approximately $112,500 to $116,773 in educational debt from PA school alone, on top of an average $36,300 in undergraduate debt. About 88% of PA students report having some form of educational debt at graduation.

Understanding these trends is essential if you want to make smart financial decisions. For a more detailed breakdown of how tuition stacks up against other health professions, you may find it helpful to read about the true cost of PA school, which covers fees, supplies, and indirect expenses that often catch students off guard.

Subjects Covered In PA Education And How To Be Successful In The Admissions Process

Earning certification as a physician assistant (PA) is no small feat. Before becoming eligible to sit for the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE), you must complete a rigorous graduate program that typically spans 27 months and includes both didactic coursework and supervised clinical rotations. Most programs require applicants to have accumulated significant direct patient care hours prior to enrollment; the exact number varies by school, but many expect at least 500 to 2,000 hours. When considering how to leverage these hours in pursuit of PA school admissions, it is important to reflect on the types of activities you will be engaging in during this time and how they demonstrate a high level of competency and experience in direct patient care roles. To help improve your chances with future schools, it may be worthwhile to pay extra attention to engaging in higher-level patient care tasks during those hours for which you can clearly describe the impact you had in your applications.

Prospective physician assistants often discover that many PA schools require additional professional development and research experiences to be completed before applying. Being aware of these requirements is an essential step for those applying, as it can affect the amount of time needed for the entirety of the application process and when all required materials will be completed. The best way to understand these requirements is by researching each school’s guidelines and budgeting extra time in your schedule. Students looking for structured ways to gain relevant experience before applying may benefit from reviewing pre-physician assistant internship options that can strengthen both their clinical exposure and their applications.

It is also worth noting that applying through CASPA (the Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistants) comes with its own costs. As of the 2025-2026 cycle, the fee to apply to your first program through CASPA is $184, with an additional $61 for each subsequent program designation. Fee waivers are available through PAEA that cover the cost of the first two designations ($245 total), but applicants are responsible for fees beyond that. If you are applying to 8 or 10 programs, those costs add up quickly and should be factored into your overall budget.

What Is The Average Cost Of Physician Assistant School In 2026 And How Has It Changed Over Time?

Prospective physician assistants and their families are often shocked by the physician assistant schooling cost, and understandably so. Generally speaking, a PA school’s cost can range anywhere from under $20,000 to over $100,000 per year, depending on the institution. This cost includes tuition and fees for the program itself, and students must also budget for living expenses such as housing, books, food, and clinical rotation travel. Individuals need to research a variety of factors such as the type of program offered at different schools (traditional or online), the geographic region in which they hope to study, the length of programs (some may require two years of full-time study while others extend to three), and specific expenses associated with each particular school.

For anyone planning to apply to a physician assistant school in 2026, the physician assistant schooling cost should be factored into the equation early. Most programs require applicants to have completed hundreds of hours of direct patient care experience before applying, and those who have less experience may have to complete additional training or coursework before enrollment. It is important for aspiring physician assistants to fully understand the average cost of PA school as this can help them save time and money in the long run. With proper planning, prospective physician assistant students are more likely to find a financially manageable path toward beginning their professional careers as PAs.

The overall cost of PA school has increased significantly over the past two decades. According to data compiled from PAEA and AAPA sources, in 2001-2002, the average national tuition fee for a full-time PA student was $21,137. By 2019-2020, that average had risen to $43,119. In 2026, the average total resident tuition for a full program now sits at approximately $98,075, with nonresident averages at $107,288. Taking into account the overall cost of PA school and associated expenses, it can be expected that the total cost for a physician assistant program will continue to rise. In addition to tuition fees, students should factor in other costs such as books, supplies, clinical equipment, certification exam fees, and living expenses.

Geography plays a significant role in what you will pay. The most expensive states for PA education include California, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Tennessee, where average tuition costs range between $90,000 and $110,000. More affordable states include Kansas, Texas, Alabama, Iowa, and Wisconsin, where averages range between $50,000 and $80,000. For a comprehensive comparison of the most budget-friendly options, take a look at our guide to the cost of medical school, which provides useful context for how PA costs compare to other health professions education.

Deciding whether to attend a campus-based or online physician assistant program can be a difficult decision due to the varying cost of PA school. If affordability is your top priority, an online program may be preferable; you may save money on tuition and have more flexibility when it comes to scheduling. However, if access to faculty support, simulation labs, and hands-on clinical resources is important to your learning, consider on-campus options.

To get a clear view of PA program costs, you can look at the table below. The table shows how the PA program cost differs depending on the location and the PA school. Note that tuition figures are based on the most recently available program-reported data and may have changed since publication; always verify directly with each program’s website before making financial decisions.

Critical 2026 Update: The Elimination of Grad PLUS Loans and What It Means for PA Students

If you are planning to start PA school in 2026 or beyond, this section may be the most important part of this article. In early 2026, the federal government passed H.R. 1 (the One Big Beautiful Bill Act), which eliminated the Grad PLUS loan program for new borrowers effective July 1, 2026. Previously, Grad PLUS loans allowed graduate students to borrow up to the full cost of attendance, which made it possible for students to cover the entire cost of PA school through federal loans. That option is now gone for anyone who first borrows after July 1, 2026.

Under the new law, federal borrowing is split into two tiers. Graduate programs have an annual limit of $20,500 and a lifetime aggregate cap of $100,000. Professional programs (such as medical school and law school) have an annual limit of $50,000 and a lifetime cap of $200,000. Here is the problem: PA programs have been classified as “graduate” rather than “professional,” meaning PA students face the lower borrowing limits.

With the average PA program costing approximately $98,075 in tuition alone, a $100,000 lifetime federal loan cap will fall short for many students, especially when you factor in living expenses, books, and fees. According to the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), the organization is actively fighting this classification. On February 26, 2026, the AAPA filed formal comments with the Department of Education, arguing that PA programs should qualify for the professional degree classification. As of this writing, that determination has not changed.

If you already have federal student loans disbursed before July 1, 2026, you are grandfathered in under the existing rules. You can continue borrowing under the old terms for up to three more years (until July 1, 2029) or until your program ends, whichever comes first. But for new borrowers entering PA school in the fall of 2026 or later, this is a significant change. Students in this situation will likely need to rely more heavily on private loans, institutional aid, employer-sponsored tuition programs, or family resources to cover the gap. For a broader look at how to approach this financial challenge, our guide to PA school scholarships vs. loans offers practical strategies for funding your education without drowning in debt.

What Financial Aid Options Are Available To Students Seeking To Become Physician Assistants?

The good news is that there are still several sources of financial aid available to physician assistant school students, even in light of the recent changes to federal loan programs. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for grants and scholarships from federal, state, or private sources. Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans remain available to graduate students, and some students may still qualify for need-based institutional aid. Private student loans from banks or credit unions remain an option, though interest rates and repayment terms will vary.

State-based programs are also worth investigating. Many states offer loan repayment assistance for healthcare professionals who commit to working in underserved areas after graduation. The National Health Service Corps (NHSC), administered by HRSA, provides loan repayment in exchange for primary care service in Health Professional Shortage Areas. This program is particularly relevant for PAs entering family medicine, internal medicine, or other primary care fields.

Scholarships specifically designated for PA students exist through professional organizations, individual programs, and community foundations. The PA Foundation, affiliated with AAPA, offers several annual scholarships. Many individual PA programs also have their own scholarship funds, so it is worth asking the financial aid office at any program you are considering. Military service members should also look into programs like the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), which can cover full tuition in exchange for a service commitment.

For help understanding all available options and how they apply to your specific situation, consider consulting with a PA school admissions advisor. A good consultant can offer guidance on how to present yourself effectively on your physician assistant school application and how to structure your financial planning alongside your admissions strategy.

How PA Salaries Compare To Education Costs in 2026

Understanding what you will earn after graduation is essential for evaluating whether the cost of PA school makes financial sense for your situation. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for physician assistants was $133,260 as of May 2024 (the most recent BLS data available). The lowest 10% of earners made less than $95,240, and the highest 10% earned more than $182,200. The 2025 AAPA Salary Report, based on a survey of 8,811 respondents, reports a median total compensation of $134,000 per year, including bonuses and productivity pay.

New graduate PAs typically start with salaries between $95,000 and $118,000, depending on specialty and location. Specialty choice matters significantly. According to the 2025 AAPA data, PAs in cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgery reported the highest median base compensation at $162,914 per year. Emergency medicine PAs reported a median of $146,000, orthopedic surgery PAs earned approximately $135,000, and family medicine PAs earned around $125,000.

When you weigh median starting salaries against the average PA graduate debt of $112,500 to $116,773, the return on investment remains strong compared to many other graduate programs. A PA who starts at $110,000 and manages their loan repayment carefully can typically pay off educational debt within 5 to 10 years, depending on their cost of living and repayment strategy. That said, the debt-to-income ratio is tighter for graduates of more expensive programs, which is another reason to think carefully about where you attend and how you finance it. For a detailed look at compensation across specialties and regions, you can review our breakdown of physician assistant salaries in the USA.

The job market for PAs continues to be very strong. The BLS projects 20% employment growth for physician assistants from 2024 to 2034, which is much faster than average. Approximately 12,000 openings for PAs are projected each year over that decade. As of 2024, physician assistants held about 162,700 jobs, and by the end of 2025, the total number of board-certified PAs in the United States had surpassed 201,000 for the first time, according to NCCPA data. This level of demand means that PA graduates who pass the PANCE continue to have favorable employment prospects across most specialties and geographic areas. It is worth noting that about 15.6% of PAs report that their educational debt levels influenced their specialty choices, according to the NCCPA’s 2024 statistical profile.

How Can You Reduce The Cost Of Physician Assistant Schools Without Compromising On Quality Or Education Standards?

Applying to physician assistant school can place a heavy financial burden on any prospective student. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the financial strain of obtaining an education in this fast-growing and rewarding field. One method is to look for tuition rates that suit your PA school cost budget. It may be possible to find lower tuition rates than those offered by standard programs if you search thoroughly. Do not be afraid to consider less popular options. Many universities differentiate between in-state and out-of-state tuition rates, so you may be able to save significantly by attending a physician assistant school program within your home state. Some of the most affordable programs in the country, such as Miami-Dade College (approximately $16,886 for in-state residents), CUNY York College ($36,655 in-state), and the University of Wisconsin system ($39,565 in-state), offer strong training at a fraction of the cost of private programs.

Ultimately, no matter which decision you make, it is important not to let the high cost of a program dissuade you from attaining your goal of becoming a physician assistant; there are always creative solutions available if you know where to look. It is also important to consider the various fees associated with a physician assistant program. Although tuition costs are largely fixed, there may be additional expenses, such as textbook and lab fees, that can add up throughout the course of your degree. Taking time to research any potential hidden costs can help you to avoid surprise expenditures; some programs even offer convenient payment plans to assist with budgeting. Additionally, you should keep an eye out for scholarships and grants that can help to alleviate any financial pressure associated with earning your degree.

Students who are still building their pre-PA profile may also benefit from investing early in structured clinical experiences. Programs that provide mentored clinical exposure can strengthen your application and, in some cases, reduce the number of application cycles you need before earning an acceptance. You can read more about how to identify good options in our article on how to find pre-physician assistant internships.

Lastly, if you’re looking to earn your degree but can’t attend classes on campus due to time or cost constraints, an online program might be worth considering. You may save both time and money when it comes to tuition and travel costs. Online courses usually involve less face-time with instructors and classmates than a traditional program, so consider whether that trade-off aligns with your learning style and clinical preparation needs.

How Do You Choose The Right Physician Assistant School For Your Needs And Budget Constraints?

Choosing the right physician assistant school for your needs and PA school cost budget can be a daunting task. To make the process easier, start by researching different programs to find one that fits within your financial means and aligns with your educational goals. Consider how much direct patient care experience you need for admission and how many hours of instruction are required during the program. Make sure the school is accredited by the ARC-PA and that its requirements meet the standards set by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Then, consider factors such as location, faculty-to-student ratios, PANCE pass rates, and other student resources offered. Also, note whether there are opportunities for research or internships during your studies.

PANCE pass rates are a particularly useful data point when comparing programs. In 2025, the national first-time PANCE pass rate was 91.5%, based on 13,145 first-time test takers. Programs that consistently fall below the national average deserve scrutiny. A program’s pass rate reflects the quality of its instruction and its ability to prepare students for independent practice. You can find program-specific pass rates on the NCCPA website.

When researching potential higher education programs, be mindful of a few key elements, including PA school cost per credit hour, program duration, and student support services. Taking the time to carefully consider these details will allow you to make an informed decision when selecting a graduate school and program that is best suited for your needs. PA school cost varies from one institution to another and depends on several factors such as residency status, number of credits taken, and cost of living in the city. Knowing how long it takes to complete the program can help you develop a comprehensive timeline for graduation.

In addition, make sure that the school or department offers sufficient student support services, including academic advising, library access, and events or seminars.

Finally, as you consider all of your options for pursuing a physician assistant career and how much PA school costs, don’t forget to look into any potential scholarships or grants that may be available for you. Grants and scholarships can help alleviate some of the financial stress associated with PA school costs, so no stone should be left unturned in your search. It can also be incredibly beneficial to speak with an experienced PA school admissions consultant if you are struggling with making your decision. Professionals who specialize in the admissions process know best what it takes to get accepted into a physician assistant program and can provide valuable insight as to which specific program would fit your needs and goals. For help determining which prerequisites and experiences you still need before applying, review our guide to PA school requirements and prerequisites.

What Are Some Tips for Reducing Expenses While Attending Physician Assistant School?

Attending a PA program can be a financial challenge, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. One of the best ways to save money while attending is to look into scholarships and grants that are available. Most schools provide an abundance of potential aid opportunities, so make sure to take the time to research these avenues before committing. Do not let an intimidating price tag discourage you from achieving your career goals. With effort, it is possible to secure funding that covers part or all of the cost of attending physician assistant school.

Living off-campus or in a shared living situation with other students can be a wise financial choice. It is often more cost-effective than remaining on campus and can provide additional space, privacy, and possibly even convenience. Not all students are comfortable with the idea of sharing their living space, but with some careful searching, sensible rules, and respectful housemates, it can prove to be a significant money saver. As a bonus, this type of living environment tends to encourage socializing with other like-minded individuals, which may be more beneficial than one might expect.

Additionally, there are several ways to make the most of your college experience while studying. Free study resources can be utilized to save money on tuition; online forums and course materials provided by peers and professors all offer valuable information that can help you succeed in your academic endeavors. Public transportation is also a great way to help reduce expenses as it eliminates the need for fuel and other associated car ownership costs.

One of the most important tips for reducing your expenses while attending physician assistant school is to avoid the temptation of impulsive purchases and focus on budgeting wisely. By carefully planning out and analyzing every expense, it is possible to keep your costs low while still getting the most from your academic experience. With a bit of effort and dedication, you can achieve your goal of becoming a physician assistant without overwhelming financial strain.

Finally, while planning the semester budget, many students overlook one major expense: textbooks. Frequently, the prices at traditional retail outlets can be quite substantial. To ease the burden of these costly purchases, students should shop around for textbooks, as some stores offer impressive discounts or rent out books at much lower costs. By searching for the best deals when buying textbooks, both undergraduate and graduate students alike can save a considerable sum of money on their higher education expenses.

The Future of Physician Assistant Employment and How to Stay Ahead

The field of physician assistant employment continues to grow rapidly. The BLS projects 20% employment growth from 2024 to 2034, with approximately 12,000 new openings each year. As of the end of 2025, more than 201,000 PAs were board-certified in the United States, up from roughly 178,700 at the end of 2023, according to NCCPA data. Nationwide, PAs now account for more than 514 million patient visits each year.

To keep pace with the profession’s growth, aspiring and current professionals must stay current with new developments in clinical practice, technology, and regulation. Nearly half of all PAs (49%) now use telemedicine in their clinical work, up from just 9.6% before the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift underscores how quickly the practice environment is changing and why ongoing professional development matters.

One development worth tracking is the profession’s ongoing title change from “physician assistant” to “physician associate.” The AAPA voted in 2021 to adopt the new title, and as of late 2025, three states (Oregon, Maine, and New Hampshire) have made the statutory change. Thirty-two of the AAPA’s 125 constituent organizations have also rebranded. The change is symbolic and does not affect scope-of-practice regulations or prescriptive authority, but it reflects an effort to more accurately describe the profession’s role.

Continuing education is essential for maintaining certification and staying competitive. Organizations such as the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) offer continuing education resources, conferences, and specialty credentialing opportunities. Staying informed on emerging technologies, evidence-based treatment protocols, and changes in state licensure requirements is
