AMCAS, AACOMAS and TMDSAS GPA Calculator

Image

Add each course, its credits and your grade to see your cumulative GPA and the science GPA that AMCAS, AACOMAS and TMDSAS would each calculate. The three science GPAs can differ because each service defines a science course and values plus and minus grades in its own way. Check a service’s box when a course counts as science under its rules, and use the comparison table below the calculator to see what counts where.

How AMCAS, AACOMAS and TMDSAS Calculate Your GPA

Your transcript GPA is rarely the number a medical school sees. You do not type a GPA into any of these applications. You enter your coursework, and each service builds its own GPAs from it. AAMC says AMCAS GPAs almost always differ from the ones your schools calculated, and AACOMAS tells applicants to expect the same kind of gap.

How to Fill In the Calculator

Work from your official transcripts and enter every graded attempt, including repeated and failed courses, because all three services count them. Choose the year level for each course and check Qtr for quarter system credits. Pass, withdrawal and incomplete grades do not change the result. A WF (withdraw failing) counts as an F. AMCAS treats a WF that way only when your school counts it as a failing grade, so check your transcript key. The cumulative GPA tile uses plus and minus values, so your TMDSAS overall GPA can differ from it. Your entries are saved in your browser, and you can export them as a CSV file and import them later.

The table below summarizes the current applicant instructions: the 2027 AMCAS Applicant Guide, the AACOMAS Applicant Help Center and the TMDSAS Application Guide and policies. The last row links to each rule at its source so you can confirm it for your cycle.

What AMCAS Calculates

AMCAS calculates your GPAs during verification, and they appear on your application once its status is Processed. Medical schools receive a BCPM GPA, an AO GPA and a total GPA for each academic status, from high school through graduate. Postbaccalaureate courses count in your undergraduate total and on their own line.

You choose each course’s classification by its primary content, not the department that taught it. Our AMCAS course classification guide covers the subjects applicants most often get wrong. If your school replaced an old grade under a forgiveness policy, enter the original grade and credits anyway. AMCAS returns applications that leave them out.

What AACOMAS Calculates

AACOMAS converts each grade to a numeric value, multiplies it by the attempted credits and divides total quality points by total credits. The biggest difference from AMCAS is math. AACOMAS puts mathematics in the non-science GPA, so a strong calculus grade lifts your AMCAS BCPM GPA but not your AACOMAS science GPA. If you are applying to both MD and DO programs, read how science GPA and overall GPA work together.

AACOMAS does not replace grades. Its transcript entry instructions say it must include all repeated courses in GPA calculations.

What TMDSAS Calculates

TMDSAS follows GPA rules set by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The scale uses whole letters only, so a B+ and a B- both count as 3.0. You still enter each grade exactly as your transcript shows it. No grade may be expunged, and every course that ever received a grade and credit is included, even if the school that issued the transcript leaves it out of its own GPA.

What Texas Academic Fresh Start Really Does

Academic Fresh Start comes from the Texas Education Code. It is not a TMDSAS program, and TMDSAS does not grant it. It lets a Texas resident applying to a Texas public undergraduate institution choose to have all coursework earned 10 or more years before enrollment ignored for admission. You cannot keep some of those old courses and drop others.

TMDSAS recognizes Fresh Start only when the designation appears on the transcript of the school that granted it. You still send every transcript and enter every course. Once TMDSAS confirms eligibility, it removes the covered coursework from its GPA calculations, although the schools you apply to still receive all of your transcripts. Fresh Start changes nothing on AMCAS or AACOMAS, where the old grades still count.

How Your GPA Compares With National Averages

AAMC reports that applicants to U.S. MD-granting medical schools for 2025-2026 had a mean total GPA of 3.67 and a mean science GPA of 3.57. Students who matriculated averaged 3.81 and 3.75, according to AAMC FACTS Table A-16. For osteopathic schools, AACOM reports that 2024 matriculants averaged 3.61 overall and 3.54 in science.

These are averages, not minimums. Our MCAT and GPA grid shows how acceptance rates shift across GPA and MCAT ranges. If your number is lower than you hoped, start with whether your GPA is good enough for medical school.
