How Many Research Hours for Medical School Do You Need?

There is no set answer to how many research hours for medical school you need: schools do not share a universal minimum, and the AAMC publishes neither a required figure nor an average. What the AAMC does say about research experience is that the majority of accepted applicants have some form of academic or clinical research when they apply, while whether research is required depends on the school.

That distinction gives you room to plan around your goals rather than chase an unsupported national target. Research may be central if you want MD-PhD training or a research-focused MD program, but clinically and community-focused schools may place more weight on patient-facing work and service. As you decide where research fits, compare it with how many clinical hours you need for medical school so that time in a lab does not leave you without meaningful exposure to medicine.

How Common Is Research Among Entering Medical Students?

Research is common, but the available national figures do not establish an hour target. In the AAMC 2025 Matriculating Student Questionnaire, 54.5% of responding students entering U.S. MD-granting medical schools reported a laboratory research apprenticeship for college students. This is a participation share, not an average or minimum number of hours. Because the survey item covers laboratory apprenticeships, it also does not capture every form of clinical, social science, humanities or community-based research. The report covers 15,184 matriculants, 64.8% of the 23,440 students who entered in 2025.

The same survey provides useful context for balancing activities. Among respondents, 95.5% had shadowed a physician or another health care professional and 90.1% had volunteered in health care. Those figures do not prescribe how much you should do, but they show why research should not automatically displace shadowing hours for medical school or volunteer hours for medical school. Schools need evidence that you understand clinical work and have served others, especially when their missions are more clinically or community focused.

Research also remains a common gap-year activity. In the 2025 questionnaire, 72.7% of new matriculants reported that at least a year had passed since college graduation. Among respondents with one or more years between college and medical school, 49.5% said they worked or volunteered in research during that time. That does not mean you need a gap year, only that starting research after college is a normal route.

What Counts as Research for Medical School?

Research does not have to take place in a wet lab or even within the natural sciences. The AAMC says medical schools value research in areas ranging from biology and neuroscience to classics, sociology, history and policy. Valid approaches can include laboratory experiments, patient-data analysis, clinical trials, interviews, surveys or an independent question about a community need.

What connects these experiences is an investigative process. The AAMC Scientific Inquiry competency includes applying the scientific process, solving problems, formulating questions or hypotheses and explaining how knowledge is discovered and validated. The University of Utah similarly looks for understanding of the scientific process, problem solving or the formation of research questions. The Case Western Reserve admissions FAQ defines research broadly as scholarly work in a wide variety of disciplines.

A required class laboratory is usually weaker evidence than work extending beyond normal coursework. AACOMAS defines its Research experience type as work on a research project, preferably in addition to or outside regular classroom work. A class project may still involve genuine inquiry, but you should be able to distinguish following predetermined instructions from helping investigate a question whose answer was not already known.

Does Clinical Research Count as Clinical Experience?

Clinical research clearly counts as research, but whether it also counts as clinical experience depends on your duties and the school evaluating them. A 2016 AAMC survey of medical school admissions contacts, to which 43% of member schools responded, found that 87% of responding schools would accept alternate activities from applicants unable to obtain shadowing. Clinical research appeared among the examples, alongside clinical volunteering and several patient-facing jobs.

That finding does not mean every clinical research position provides clinical exposure. Reviewing de-identified records is different from enrolling study participants, interacting with patients or observing clinical decision-making. Describe what you actually did, avoid counting the same duties twice and consult each target school’s guidance when deciding how to characterize the experience.

When Does Research Matter More or Less?

Research matters most when it is closely connected to a program’s mission and the career you say you want. The statements below come from the AAMC, AACOMAS and individual schools’ own admissions pages, and each source name in the table links to the page it quotes. They show why you should read program requirements instead of applying one hour target to every MD, MD-PhD or DO school.

Four-Year MD Programs

The table above shows that MD schools publishing research guidance usually describe its value without setting a number. Northwestern Feinberg strongly recommends research and clinical experience but requires no particular amount. Utah says competitive applicants’ hours may vary. Case Western’s four-year University Program does not require prior research, although successful applicants must show interest in undertaking a future project. The University of Maryland School of Medicine says research experience and community service are highly valued while emphasizing quality over quantity.

Georgetown is the notable school-specific hour example. Its 2026-2027 application guide says a highly competitive applicant presents 100 or more research hours in any academic discipline, listed beside 200 or more clinical hours and 100 or more hours of direct service to an underserved population. Those are Georgetown’s benchmarks for its highly competitive applicants, not national recommendations.

Research-Focused MD and MD-PhD Programs

Research-focused paths use much stronger language. The five-year Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine program requires more than two summers of hypothesis-driven research in a medical or nonmedical field. An AAMC presentation for MD-PhD applicants describes substantive experience as sustained research that includes familiarity with hypothesis testing and experience presenting the work.

Individual MD-PhD programs commonly express expectations in years, academic terms or summers rather than total hours. Michigan’s MSTP generally expects at least two summers of full-time lab work plus an academic year of research at 10 to 15 hours per week, while explaining that 18 months is not an absolute requirement. Penn typically looks for at least one year with the same laboratory or mentor and usually more. Wisconsin publishes no minimum hours but says competitive applicants typically have at least 1.5 cumulative years. Northwestern lists at least one academic year or three summers among its minimum criteria. The Stanford MSTP admissions FAQ calls previous sustained and productive research the single most important part of an MSTP application, after qualification for medical school admission.

Do not convert those expectations into a single total. They describe separate programs and place more emphasis on continuity, productivity and readiness for a physician-scientist career than on interchangeable hours. According to the AAMC overview of applying to MD-PhD programs, the training typically takes seven to eight years and prepares students for careers in which they spend most of their time doing research in addition to caring for patients, so it should match the work you want rather than serve as another route to medical school.

DO Programs

Research can strengthen a DO application, but it does not appear in the AACOM list of what osteopathic medical schools look for. That list names community service, leadership, clinical experience, extracurricular involvement, knowledge of osteopathic medicine and shadowing a DO. AACOMAS nevertheless provides a Research experience type, and Campbell University’s osteopathic medical school says it looks closely at health-related work or research experience. When comparing MD vs DO education, review each school’s mission rather than assuming research carries the same weight everywhere.

What Makes Research Experience Strong?

Strong research experience is defined less by reaching a round number than by showing depth. You should understand the question your team investigated, why the method made sense, what your own responsibilities were and how the findings or setbacks changed the project.

Continuity can help you develop that understanding. That is why Penn’s MSTP measures sustained experience by time with the same laboratory or mentor. Staying with one project can give you time to move beyond basic training, take responsibility for part of the work and explain its limitations. It can also allow a mentor to observe your initiative, teamwork and response to failed experiments or unexpected results.

Posters and talks provide evidence that you can interpret and communicate your work. Publications are welcome, but they are not required even for MD-PhD applicants, the group for whom research carries the greatest weight. The AAMC, Penn and Wisconsin all make that point. Penn adds that many of its successful candidates have authored or co-authored manuscripts or conference abstracts, but that publications are not required, especially for candidates applying after their junior year of college. Publication timing also depends on the project and laboratory, so authorship is not a fair substitute for understanding your contribution.

A mentor’s letter can add context that an hour total cannot. The AAMC presentation for MD-PhD applicants advises applicants to include letters from significant research experiences, with the principal investigator serving as the main writer even when a postdoctoral researcher provided close supervision. Wisconsin weighs research mentor letters heavily, and Feinberg accepts a research supervisor as a recommendation source for traditional applicants.

Your activities should ultimately form a coherent account of your preparation. In an AAMC article on what admissions officers wish premeds knew, Wake Forest admissions dean David D. Grier observed that most applicants have enough work, volunteer, shadowing and research experiences to fill AMCAS. His advice was to connect experiences into a story rather than present a checklist. For you, that means explaining how research shaped your thinking about medicine, not merely reporting that you accumulated time.

How Should You Record Research on AMCAS and AACOMAS?

Keep a running record of your dates, completed hours, supervisor, project question, duties and outputs while the details are fresh. When you complete the AMCAS Work and Activities section, AMCAS asks for start and end dates, total hours and a contact who can verify each experience. You choose the category that best fits because experience types are self-identified.

The 2027 AMCAS Applicant Guide says to enter total completed hours for each date range. If an experience repeated, you may add up to three more date ranges and report completed hours for each. AMCAS separates completed and anticipated hours, with anticipated experiences extending no later than August 2027 for that cycle. AMCAS does not accept anticipated hours for publications or presentations.

Research/Lab, Presentations/Posters and Publications are separate experience types in the 2027 AMCAS Application Workbook. Presentations/Posters and Publications require one date, and a publication may carry zero hours. This lets you describe your day-to-day research contribution separately from a resulting poster or paper instead of assigning the same labor to every output.

MD-PhD applicants also complete a Significant Research Experience essay. For the 2027 cycle, it allows 10,000 characters and asks for each supervisor’s name and affiliation, the duration, the problem studied and your contributions. If you authored a publication from the research, AMCAS instructs you to put its full citation in Work and Activities.

AACOMAS records time differently. Its Experiences guidance asks for average weekly hours during the stated date range and does not allow you to repeat the same hours across experience types. In either system, report the schedule honestly and describe overlapping research and clinical duties with enough precision that the reader can see what you actually did.

How Can You Find Research Experience?

Start with IMA’s guide to how to get research experience as an undergraduate if you need a step-by-step search plan. Your immediate goal is to identify a question and mentor that interest you, then confirm that the expected schedule fits beside your classes and other pre-med commitments.

The AAMC recommends checking departmental and undergraduate research websites, faculty biographies and lab pages, then telling professors and academic or prehealth advisors that you are looking. Its Undergrad-Grad-PI approach starts with undergraduates in the lab, moves to graduate students or postdoctoral researchers who can explain the project and then reaches the principal investigator after you have read a recent paper or abstract.

Your email should introduce you formally, show familiarity with the faculty member’s work and make a specific request. Following up or visiting office hours may help if an initial email is missed. Before accepting, ask about the weekly commitment, full-time summer expectations, research credit and other conditions. Some labs may expect 20 or more hours per week or full-time summer work, but that is a position requirement to clarify, not an admissions target. A focused research assistant cover letter can also help when you apply for formal research jobs.

If your college has limited research, look beyond its campus. The National Science Foundation’s REU Sites place eligible associate and bachelor’s degree students at host institutions. Participants receive stipends and often assistance with housing, meals and travel. Most sites operate in summer, with deadlines generally from January through March. The AAMC also maintains a listing of summer undergraduate research programs at medical schools and research institutions.

Recent graduates can consider laboratory technician or clinical research coordinator positions at universities, research hospitals or biotechnology companies. The NIH Postbac Program offers one or two years of full-time research for recent college graduates, while the NIH also operates a summer internship program for college students. If laboratory access remains limited, research in public health, social science, humanities or a community question can still demonstrate inquiry when guided by an appropriate mentor.

How Should You Balance Research With Other Pre-Med Activities?

Treat research as one part of a broader application. Medical schools consider it beside academic preparation, clinical exposure, service, shadowing and evidence that you understand the profession. Research does not replace the grades and test scores discussed in IMA’s guide to how medical schools compare MCAT scores and GPA. For MD-PhD programs the weighting can run the other way: Michigan’s MSTP says a strong research background can offset weaknesses in GPA and MCAT scores for its applicants, while the reverse is not true.

The AAMC’s 2025 questionnaire offers a practical reason to protect time for clinical and service experiences: shadowing and health care volunteering were reported by substantially larger shares of respondents than college laboratory research apprenticeships. Unless you are pursuing MD-PhD training or a research-focused program, do not let optional research consume the time you need to learn what patient care involves. Structured pre-med internships are one possible way to gain clinical exposure, alongside local employment, volunteering and shadowing opportunities.

A workable plan begins with your target schools and your actual interests. Read mission statements and program requirements, try research long enough to understand the work and then decide whether deeper involvement fits your goals. The AAMC says the amount of research you pursue should depend on how much you enjoy it after trying it, and that genuine interest is better than checking a box.

Once you commit, favor consistency over scattered short experiences. Ask the mentor about scheduling before you begin, record completed hours as you go and write down the question your project addresses. Revisit your plan each term to make sure research is not weakening your academics, clinical learning or service.

Build a Research Plan Around Your Goals

You do not need to reach a national research-hour threshold because none exists. Instead, identify how strongly your target programs emphasize research, protect time for clinical exposure and service and choose work you can discuss with real understanding. If research becomes central to your career plans, seek sustained responsibility and mentorship. If it does not, a smaller but genuine experience can still help you understand how medical knowledge is tested.

Your next step is straightforward: review the missions and requirements of schools you may apply to, decide whether research fills a meaningful gap in your preparation and start keeping an accurate activity log. A plan based on program fit, continuity and honest interest will serve you better than an invented hour target.
