To meet the needs of individual students, including preparing them fully and efficiently for the next stage of their education and entry into the working medical community, the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University created a 3-year + program in which students complete the typical 4-year medical program in 3 years and then continue on into one of three unique pathways.

The purpose of this curriculum option is to help guide students towards serving the people of Georgia in primary care settings, while allowing the MD program to merge the academic lessons and success from the case-based learning approach with the integrated clinical track at the Rome campus. This provides students with several 4th-year opportunities to transition smoothly and quickly into the medical community.
MCG 3+ Primary Care Pathway
For students pursuing a career in primary care medicine, this track allows them to graduate in 3 years and go immediately into a residency in primary care, whether that be family medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, or surgery. Students who commit themselves to working in primary care in underserved regions of Georgia will be granted a scholarship.

Volunteer Service and Clinical Experience
While there is no minimum number of hours required for volunteer service and clinical experiences, they are very important to the admissions committee at Augusta Medical College. Submerging yourself in the medical community gives you a major advantage. The admissions committee loves to see applicants who have proven their commitment to a career in medicine by volunteering at health clinics, participating in vaccination events, shadowing medical professionals, being mentored, etc.
Logging volunteer hours in underserved and rural regions of Georgia will look fabulous on your application, so don’t forget to list it all. The more the better.

Augusta Medical College School Letters of Recommendation
All applicants are required to submit a minimum of three letters, and these should be submitted through AMCAS (which we’ll talk about soon). An application without three letters of recommendation will be considered invalid and thrown out. It’s preferable that some of the letters be authored by faculty members from your science apartment.

AMCAS Primary Application & the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University Secondary Application
The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University partners with the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) for primary applications and letters of recommendation submissions. This centralized service makes it easy for schools to sort through the thousands of applications that come flooding in every year to find those applicants who meet the base qualifications for consideration. AMCAS will forward qualifying applications to the MCG admissions committee for further evaluation, and those applicants will be invited to fill in the secondary application developed specifically for August Medical College. Essay #1. Please discuss your primary interest in attending the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.
Make sure to take some time, if you haven’t already, to familiarize yourself with the core values, mission, and vision of MCG. The admissions committee wants to know why you have decided that this is the right school for you. Make sure your reasons are both true and meaningful.
Sample Answer:
The people of Georgia deserve the best healthcare possible, whether they live in bustling cities or quiet, rural neighborhoods. Growing up in Bartow, Georgia, we had a difficult time seeing quality doctors. We could access some basic healthcare about eleven miles away, but seeing a specialist was always a challenge.
When I realized my passion was for medicine, I would often daydream about coming back after graduation to my hometown, or another small, rural community, and starting up my own practice. My family deserved better healthcare. My mother was often sick, and the doctors couldn’t do much to help her. It was devastating watching her suffer and wishing there was just one compassionate, understanding doctor who wouldn’t give up on finding a diagnosis and developing a treatment plan. It felt like the doctors had just given up on her.
I want to be the kind of doctor that my family deserves. I want to serve people in small communities who lack quality healthcare. I want to study at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University because of their commitment to diversity, social justice, and serving the underserved parts of Georgia.
Another reason I hope to matriculate at MCG is merely due to the incredible faculty members. I have spent time studying the accomplishments of the professors, and I was overwhelmed by their amazing contributions to science and healthcare. Essay #2. Please describe your motivation for becoming a physician. What contributions do you feel that you could make to the medical profession in the future?
Dig deep for your true motivations. Hopefully, if you’re aspiring to become a physician, you want to help people, but why? What instilled in you this desire to serve others in the medical community? How can you make the healthcare system better?
Essay #3. Please list any additional clinical experiences that are not included on your AMCAS application. Please include the physician’s name OR type of experience (i.e., Nursing, PA, EMT, E.R. Scribe, etc.) in the description column below along with the location, dates, and total number of hours. If no additional experiences have occurred, please select “N/A.”
The more medical experiences you can share in this section, the better. The admissions committee loves to see that you’ve been preparing for your future career by investing time in medically-focused areas. List everything, even if it’s just a day served at a vaccination clinic, or a pre-med shadowing study abroad program. Every entry earns points in the eyes of the admissions committee.
Essay #4. The admissions committee regards the diversity of an entering class as an important factor in serving the educational mission of MCG and meeting the healthcare needs of a diverse patient population. Please describe how your own personal attributes, background, or life experiences would contribute to the diversity of the class.
This is a great opportunity to help the admissions committee see you as an individual rather than one of the masses. Give them a real piece of yourself in this essay. Don’t be afraid to go to a personal place with it and share what makes you an excellent addition to a diverse student body. How will your presence there make the school a more accepting, diverse, and socially just institution?
Essay #5. The Art of medicine requires resilience on the part of its practitioners. There can be perceived failure even when the medical team has done everything right. Please describe a time when you were part of something that failed. What did you learn from this experience?
Select a story to tell that really speaks to the human condition. Failure is hard on all of us and brutal on some. Share an experience with failure that really swept your legs out from under you. How did you make it through that experience, and what did you learn?
Essay #6. Please describe the geographical area in which you would most likely practice medicine and why. Please include the country, region, state, city, and/or town in your response.
Remember that one of the key visions of MCG is to send out skilled physicians to serve the underserved and often unseen populations of rural Georgia. Now, you may not feel called to serve in those areas, and it’s always good to be honest in your prompts, but if you do feel drawn to serving the underserved patients of Georgia, make sure to elaborate on that.
Essay #7. Please explain any inconsistencies in your academic record. This may include below average course performance, grade trends, MCAT scores, etc. Enter N/A if none.
If you do have inconsistencies, please honestly and transparently explain any reasons for these inconsistencies. Did you experience loss? Illness? Trauma of some sort? Did COVID-19 affect you more than most? These are all valid concerns to share with the admissions committee.
Essay #8. If applicable, indicate any special experiences, unusual factors, or other information you have not already addressed in your application.
Search your life, your heart, and your application, and use this space to give the admissions committee a clear picture of who you are as an individual. Just remember, you want them to remember you.
Essay #9. Please Discuss any disruptions to your medical school application as a result of COVID-19. This may include, but is not limited to, academic performance, clinical, volunteer, research, and extracurricular activities.
COVID-19 took such a toll on many of us, and it caused setbacks, delays, and losses. Be personal here and share how COVID-19 disrupted your life. This could be academically, emotionally, or even spiritually. Just be honest and personal.
The Medical College of Georgia Interview Process
There are usually around 600 students who are invited to interview, so it is encouraging if you make it to this step. Applicants at MCG who are invited to interview will take part in a Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) process. The MMI process at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University takes students through 8 short stations of 8-minutes each over the course of 90 minutes. The process is believed to bring out noteworthy personal characteristics in the candidates and to get to know them better as a whole person.
There are breaks planned into the schedule, and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask lots of questions and get to know others. Make sure to explore campus while you’re there and even take a tour. This is a time for the admissions committee to determine if you’re a good fit for MCG and for you to determine if this school is right for you.
