Setting

Housing Options at UNR

Nevada Living Learning Community: These are single rooms with air conditioning and shared bathrooms, priced at $9,100 per year.

Nye Hall: This building has eight coed floors and can accommodate 555 residents. It’s connected to Argenta Hall, home to the Downunder Dining Commons.

Sierra and Juniper Halls: These halls offer limited single rooms.

Other Housing Options: Additional options include Peavine Hall, Nye Hall again, and Sierra and Juniper Halls.

Application Timeline

The housing application opens at midnight on November 15 each year for all students. To optimize your chance of getting your preferred housing or roommate, complete the application by February 1 at 11:59 p.m.

Steps to Apply for Housing

Apply to the University: Before applying for housing, you must have submitted your application to the university. This will generate your NSHE ID, which you’ll need for housing application.

Plan Ahead: Look at the housing and dining options and note down your preferences, keeping an eye on all the important dates and deadlines.

Begin the Online Application: Log into the application portal and fill in all the required information, including your choice of room and meal plan.

Complete Necessary Forms: Read the License Agreement and complete the guarantor form if you’re under 18.

Initial Payment: An upfront payment of $300 is required. Contact staff at (775) 784-1113 if this presents a hardship for you.

Optional – Living Learning Community: If you’re interested in Living Learning Communities, fill out the separate application for that.

Review and Submit: Double-check all your application details before final submission.

Gender-Inclusive Housing

UNR provides three types of gender-inclusive housing: by suite/apartment, by room, and communal housing. These options are designed to create an inclusive environment for all students, regardless of gender identity.

Housing Assignments

Assignments are generally made based on the order in which applications and initial payments are received. Preference is given to early applications and those with specific roommate preferences.

First-Year Students

For first-year students, almost 2,700 of the available 3,200 beds are reserved. A meal plan is mandatory for first-year students living on campus.

Sophomores and Above

Suite and apartment-style housing is generally available to returning, transfer, and non-traditional students based on availability.

Transfer Students

Transfer students can live in Sierra Hall or the Transfer Living Learning Community in Canada Hall, with certain eligibility criteria.

Returning Students

If you’re a current resident looking to continue your stay, you can apply as a returning student.

Graduate Students

Graduate students primarily have the option of staying at Ponderosa Village Apartments.

The initial step in your journey to join the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine begins with the American Medical College Application Service® (AMCAS®). This centralized service streamlines the application process, making it easier for applicants to apply to multiple programs.

For Reapplicants

If you’ve applied to UNR Med before and are trying again, you can resubmit up to two evaluation letters from your most recent application cycle, provided they were written no more than two years prior to your current application date. However, at least one letter must be new and specifically dated for the current admissions cycle.

• Committee Letter: Accepted. This is generally a comprehensive letter from a pre-health committee or advisor.
• Letter Packet: Accepted. This is a set of letters often distributed by your institution’s career center, but it does not include an evaluative letter from a pre-health committee or advisor.

Requirements and Fees

Yes, a secondary application is required and comes with a fee of $75. Fee waivers are available for those who qualify.

Submission and Deadlines

The secondary application can be submitted by any applicant who meets all the specified criteria, including residency, MCAT scores, GPA, and prerequisites. Early Decision Program (Deadline: August 1)

UNR Med offers an Early Decision Program (EDP) through AMCAS. If you’re certain that UNR Med is your first choice, this route allows you to secure a seat early. Requirements include an AMCAS application, three evaluation letters, an eligible MCAT score, and the completion of Casper and Duet assessments.

• Notifications for interview invitations are sent out by September 1.
• Final admission decisions for EDP are announced between September 15 and October 1.
• If not admitted via EDP, your application will automatically shift to the regular admissions pool, with final decisions communicated by February 20.

MD/PhD Combined Program (Deadline: September 1)

For those interested in merging clinical practice with scientific research, two seats are reserved in the MD/PhD program. Application requirements include an AMCAS application, three specific evaluation letters (academic, clinical, and research), and an eligible MCAT score.

Regular MD Program (Deadline: October 1)

Essay #1. Discuss your reasons for choosing to pursue medical education at UNR Med and how you can contribute to its mission. (300 words)

Choosing to pursue medical education at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) was a conscious decision influenced by the institution’s focus on community-based medicine. Originally from Elko, Nevada, I’ve seen firsthand the healthcare disparities rural communities face. UNR Med’s commitment to addressing such disparities resonated deeply with me. Additionally, the school’s robust student organizations like the “A Healthier Nevada” and “Medical Spanish Student Interest Group” align perfectly with my interests in public health and medical outreach.

The school’s emphasis on research is another compelling aspect for me. During my undergraduate years, I worked on a public health project that aimed to reduce rates of childhood obesity within the Latinx community in Sparks, Nevada. I believe this experience equips me to contribute to UNR Med’s ongoing research initiatives.

In my previous role at Renown Health in Reno, I was part of a team tasked with implementing a new electronic health records system. The transition was difficult, as most team members, including experienced physicians like Dr. Rajesh Gupta, were resistant to the change.

My major learning was the value of open communication and empathy. Rather than pushing the new system, we facilitated several feedback sessions where team members could express their concerns. By addressing these issues, we gained buy-in from even the most skeptical staff.

In future team settings, I will prioritize creating an open dialogue, where each member’s perspective is valued. I’ve learned that tackling challenges is easier when everyone is on the same page.

Essay #3. Describe an instance where you served underprivileged populations. What insights did you gain? (300 words)

Volunteering at the Community Health Alliance clinic in Reno offered me the opportunity to serve low-income and uninsured individuals. Through this work, I met Rosa, a single mother from Guatemala who couldn’t afford prescription medications for her children.

The experience taught me that healthcare is more than just clinical diagnosis; it’s about understanding the social determinants that affect health. Rosa’s financial barriers were just as critical to her family’s health as any medical condition.

Essay #4. Talk about a significant life crisis or failure you have faced. What were your takeaways? (300 words)

I experienced significant hardship when my father was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. The emotional strain was enormous, but the situation was exacerbated by the lack of healthcare resources in Elko.

The ordeal taught me resilience and the importance of accessible healthcare, strengthening my resolve to become a physician. I learned that setbacks are not the end but rather learning curves that shape character and purpose.

Essay #5. Illustrate a problem you’ve solved using critical thinking and effective communication. (300 words)

During my internship at Carson Tahoe Health, I noticed a recurring issue with patient wait times. Utilizing critical thinking, I proposed a streamlined check-in process. After discussing the plan with hospital administrators like Ayesha, we implemented it, significantly reducing waiting periods and boosting patient satisfaction.

Effective communication was key, as I had to convey my observations and suggestions succinctly and persuasively. This experience highlighted how critical thinking and clear communication are essential tools in solving practical problems.

Essay #6. (Optional) Any additional information you’d like to provide, especially if you are reapplying. (500 words)

I applied to UNR Med last year but was not admitted. However, I took the interim year to strengthen my application by gaining more clinical experience and enhancing my academic profile. Interview Process

Between July and August, invitations for the Multi-Mini Interviews (MMIs) are extended to around 300 Nevada residents and 50 out-of-state candidates. These virtual interviews are conducted through a secure platform.

Eligibility to Apply

Two categories dictate eligibility: Nevada Applicants and Out-of-State Applicants. Each category has specific criteria relating to residency, academic qualifications, and MCAT scores.

Nevada applicants are notified by November 1 if selected for an interview, with decision notifications generally coming between December and February. In-state tuition eligibility is determined through a separate process and form.

Out-of-State Applicants

If you’re an out-of-state applicant, UNR Med has specified criteria you must meet, along with certain questions that should be answered affirmatively, with supporting documentation. This can help establish your eligibility for consideration, even if you’re not a Nevada resident.

Residency Requirements

You must be a resident of certain U.S. states or specific counties in California. Alternatively, having a close relative who has lived in Nevada for at least 12 months could also make you eligible. Previous long-term residency in Nevada is another way to qualify.

Academic Criteria

• Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.30.
• Or 30+ post-bac credit hours with a GPA of 3.50 or above.
• Or a completed graduate degree with a GPA of 3.50 or above.
• MCAT score must be 500 or above.

Chance of Selection

The school states that only about 10% of out-of-state applicants who complete the secondary application are invited for an interview. The class usually includes 5-7 out-of-state students.

Tuition

Out-of-state applicants generally pay out-of-state tuition for the first year, but may qualify for in-state tuition in subsequent years.

Prerequisites

You must have specific course credits in Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, and Psychology or Sociology. Grades for these courses should be C- or above.
