Initiated from a critical observation within the High Risk Obstetrics Clinic at UIHC, the Upstream Initiative identified that many patients were experiencing significant social challenges outside the clinical environment, adversely impacting their pregnancy outcomes. In 2016, Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) students conducted a survey revealing up to 40% of patients were influenced by social determinants of health, with food insecurity notably prevalent among diabetic patients.
Presently, the Upstream Initiative is a collaborative force of graduate health professions students, nursing students, and undergraduates volunteering at the High-Risk Obstetrics Clinic. This team is dedicated to linking patients with essential resources to mitigate food insecurity and transportation challenges, not only within UIHC but also extending support to community partners like the Coralville Food Pantry and Mobile Clinic.
